Recommended excursions
This New York institution recently relocated to state-of-the-art refrigerated premises at Hunts Point in the Bronx. A third of the state’s fish demand is handled here, with top chefs from all over the city hand picking the freshest catch each day. Students love to engage with fishmongers of the 37 strong business cooperative, in operation since 1822.
This non-profit college has been producing award-winning chefs since the 1970s and is renowned worldwide for its culinary education. The New York campus runs enthusiastic tours given by current students and serves up exquisite food in the on-site restaurants. Tip: We always stop at the college’s own Apple Pie Bakery for the best muffins in New York.
Explore the cultural cuisine of Chinatown on a tour of its tempting food outlets. Susan Rosenbaum, also known as the Enthusiastic Gourmet, imparts all the history and unique flavours of this New York neighbourhood. Students can enjoy delicacies such as salt and pepper shrimp, curry beef pie and pork dumpling, and go shopping for specialities and supplies.
Sample international street food in the city that does it best. On a strolling lunch in Midtown or the Financial District students can feast on dishes from falafel to kati rolls and Mexican tacos. See how full kitchens are crammed into improbably small carts, learn vendors’ stories and support a charity that represents them with a portion of the ticket price. (12 – 2pm)
Learn how to make outstanding pizza in New York – home to 1800 pizzerias. Students start by mixing up a supremely workable dough and then are guided step-by-step through every detail of how to stretch, top and bake their pizzas to perfection. Make multiple pizzas to enjoy in class and leave with leftovers for later, plus freshly made dough to go.
