Some of America’s biggest shows are filmed here at NBC includingSaturday Night Live and The Rosie O’Donnell Show. Studio tours are always entertaining, where students are taken behind the scenes to witness the running of the network and learn about the history of live television.
The museum’s 2011 expansion has allowed for a three-story addition and slick panoramic entrance fitting with its Hollywood memorabilia. Students can travel from ‘Behind the Screen’ where the production process is revealed, to live editing and video artist exhibitions. Film retrospectives and lectures are great for film buffs wanting more inside knowledge.
This unique experience provides access to more than 150,000 TV and radio programs dating back to the birth of broadcasting. Three galleries of photographs and artefacts document the history, examining the perpetually evolving nature of the media. Classes and workshops provide comprehensive media studies with exciting resources to enhance the experience.
This famous film academy now offers guided tours and day workshops to give students a taste of real filmmaker training. The courses are intensive and hands-on, aiming to develop your students’ production knowledge and creative skills. Seminars are tailored depending on the topic of choice and cover areas like filmmaking, digital journalism and screenwriting.
This is a classic bus tour of the well-known TV and film sites in New York City and students love it. The route takes in such spots as the Cosby Show brownstone and Friends apartment block, with an accompanying soundtrack of theme tunes. There are also trivia games on the bus and upbeat local guides giving facts about industry as well as history and gossip.
From the start, Radio City was designed to enchant, built just after the stock market crash of 1929 as a symbol of hope. It is the largest indoor theatre in the world but retains a feeling of intimacy through its grand interiors and extraordinary use of space. New ‘Stage Door’ tours reveal both the theatre history and impressive new technological features.
This is an excellent photography museum that has a collection of over 150,000 prints spanning the history of photography. Exhibitions display work by both famous and unknown artists, and explore themes such as ecology, science and war through innovative group shows. Student tours are tailored and work to build visual literacy and critical thinking skills.
Many US TV shows, such as the famous Good Morning America, are filmed in front of a studio audience. Students can join this audience and be part of a live broadcast. They may get front row seats and a chance to meet news anchors. Groups booking in advance can also get a backstage studio tour.
Tip: Good Morning America participation requires an early start of 7am.
Offering students a unique insight into life behind the camera, this workshop is the perfect opportunity to develop the professional skills required to build a career in filmmaking. Students will be able to explore key elements including directing, acting, shooting and editing.
